Below are some examples of what you can extract:
Dried Flowers: Lavender, Calendula, Basil Flower, Rose
Aromatic botanicals & Herbs: Citronella, Sage, Oregano, Basil, Rosemary, Lemon Balm
Spices: Peppercorn, Cinnamon, Anise, Nutmeg
Wood: Sandalwood, Cedar, Palo Santo

Fresh Botanicals and Fruits can be extracted but the finished extract may contain water which decreases shelf life and can not be used with some recipes (Lotions, Creams, Infused Oils)
Essential Oils are aromatic compounds extracted from plants and they are highly concentrated and volatile substances that carry the essence of the plant from which they are derived. Essential oils are usually obtained through processes like steam distillation, cold pressing, CO2 extraction, or other solvent extraction.
Absolutes are like essential oils but are extracted using solvent extraction. CO2 extraction offers some advantages over solvent extraction for producing absolutes. It is considered a cleaner and more environmentally friendly method, as it does not involve the use of potentially harmful solvents. Additionally, CO2 extraction can yield a broader range of aromatic compounds compared to solvent extraction, resulting in CO2 extracts that may capture more of the plant’s natural fragrance profile. This method is often used for delicate flowers where distillation may damage the fragrance compounds. Absolutes are highly concentrated and often more expensive than essential oils due to the complexity of the extraction process.
CO2 Extracts (CO2’s) involves using carbon dioxide obviously to extract aromatic compounds from plants. This method allows for the extraction of a broader range of compounds compared to traditional methods like distillation or solvent extraction. CO2 extracts tend to retain more of the plant’s original aroma and are often considered closer to the natural scent of the plant.
Concentrates refer to any substance that has been processed to increase the proportion of desirable components. In the context of aromatherapy or fragrance, concentrates can refer to highly potent forms of essential oils, absolutes, or CO2 extracts. These are often used in smaller quantities compared to their non-concentrated counterparts.
Extracts refer to substances obtained by extracting a desired compound from a natural source using a solvent. This term is broad and can encompass a variety of extraction methods including distillation, solvent extraction, or CO2 extraction. Extracts can be liquid or solid depending on the solvent used and the nature of the desired compound.
Yes, absolutes can be produced using CO2 extraction methods. While traditional absolutes are typically obtained through solvent extraction, CO2 extraction technology has advanced to the point where it can be used to create CO2 extracts that closely resemble traditional absolutes.
