Directions:
Aroma – add 3-4 drops per 100ml of water
Topical – dilute to 5% in a carrier oil
Flavor – Lavender oil is typically used in flavoring at a dilution of 0.1% to 0.5% depending on the desired strength and the recipe. This translates to approximately:
- 0.1%: 1 drop of lavender oil in 500–1,000 mL of the product (e.g., beverages or syrups).
- 0.5%: 1 drop in 100–200 mL for a stronger flavor.
Safety:
*Start with the lowest concentration and adjust to taste, as lavender has a potent and distinctive flavor.
Lavender essential oil is widely used in cosmetics, aromatherapy, and perfumes, but its ingestion is more contentious due to its potency and potential toxicity at high doses.
While lavender oil is not officially GRAS for food use, it may be used as a flavoring under flavoring expert panels that accept its safe use in minute quantities for specific applications. The Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) lists lavender oil with FEMA number 2621, meaning it may be used as a flavoring agent in trace amounts under GMP.
In the European Union (EU), lavender oil is permitted for flavoring in foods under Regulation (EC) No. 1334/2008, provided safety limits are adhered to.
